Kate Murphy

Originally from Louisville, KY, Kate Murphy holds degrees in music and biology from DePauw University in Greencastle, IN. She received her Masters of Divinity and Masters of Sacred Theology from Boston University and accepted her first call to be the Associate Pastor at Fourth Presbyterian, a multiethnic inner-city church in South Boston.
Kate moved to Charlotte in 2004 when she accepted the call to the Associate Pastor for Youth and Children's Ministry at Cook's Memorial Presbyterian church. In 2008, she became the Temporary Pastor of Hickory Grove Presbyterian Church, guiding the congregation through a transformation process that birthed a growing, diverse congregation that serves East Charlotte.
Kate regularly writes public theology pieces for the Charlotte Observer & McClatchy News. She records a podcast about healthy and holy multiethnic ministry called '2 Pastors Take A Walk' with her friend Rev. Eulando Henton. Her first book, 'Lost Hidden Small: Finding the Way of Jesus Where We Never Think To Look' was published by Broadleaf Press in October 2025.
In her free time Kate enjoys swimming, reading, writing, drinking coffee and watching pointless reality television. She and her husband Colin have three daughters and no pets.
